Company targets 500 convenience stores by 2020
In an attempt to increase the number of Lawson 108 convenience stores to 500 units by 2020, the local operator of Lawson 108 convenience stores, Saha Lawson Co, has awarded franchise rights for fuel retailer, Susco Plc to open Lawson stores at its new fuel stations this year. An agreement was signed recently to this effect. Susco will start opening two Lawson convenience stores at new Susco fuel stations this year, as per the agreement.
The senior general manager for operations and marketing at Saha Lawson, Hideki Takechi, said that the total number of Lawson stores at Susco outlets is targeted to reach 20 branches next year. By year-end, the company plans to increase its number of outlets to 100 branches, and during 2018-20, open at least 400 new stores.
The company will open half of the new branches on its own and the rest under a franchise system. "We are ready to start our franchise with Susco as a pilot project and we expect that cooperation will help springboard the expansion of Lawson convenience stores upcountry," said Mr Takechi.
Several fuel companies have opted to enhance their fuel stations, offering food shops, coffee houses and convenience outlets, due to falling retail prices.
With an estimated population of 127 million in Japan, there are 55,000 convenience stores nationwide. With nearly 69 million people in Thailand, there are 15,000 branches, leaving ample room for growth. Lawson also plans to put more effort into promoting original food items offered exclusively to Thai customers to differentiate its stores from others. Source: Bangkok Post PWKD09082017
