Australia: Woolworths Awards Customers With Own Shopping Bags

From 14 July 2018 until 31 December 2018, Rewards offer will be available in Woolworth’s supermarkets and Metro stores.

Bonus Woolworths Rewards points will be offered to customers, from Saturday 14 July, who bring their own reusable bags when shopping at Woolworths, as a mark of recognition for their ongoing support to help Australia move towards a greener future.

Whether they are Woolworths branded reusable bags, those of other supermarkets or their own BYO bag of choice, customers will earn two Rewards points for every shopping bag they bring with them to use in-store. four points will be awarded to a customer who is doing a small basket shop with two of their own bags, while someone doing a larger weekly family shop with 10 of their own reusable bags will earn 20 points.

Brad Banducci, Woolworths Group CEO said; “We know the majority of our customers across Australia have embraced the move to a more sustainable way of shopping since we phased out single-use plastic bags. We want to thank customers and our store teams for their support during this change.

Forming new habits is an adjustment for some of the customers and the recent complimentary bag offer is aimed at providing a little extra help during the transition. Banducci added, “We believe now is the time to encourage and reinforce greener habits and hope this Rewards recognition will act as a further prompt for all customers to bring their own bags when shopping with us.”

Store teams will ask customers if they have brought their own bags when they get to the checkout, to confirm customers receive the right Rewards points’ recognition. To ensure customers are allocated the correct points when completing their purchase, the team member will then enter the number of bags.

Brad Banducci stated, “As the fresh food people we are focused on supporting our customer’s food and grocery needs. The reusable shopping bags we have available for purchase in our stores are there for the convenience of customers who forget to bring enough of their own bags. Our store teams remain focused on helping shoppers with the transition away from single-use plastic bags over the coming weeks and we encourage customers to speak to a team member if they need further support during this time.”

Banducci concluded that at Woolworths they will continue to do the right thing by the communities in which they operate and play their part in the move towards a circular economy. “We’re proud to be working with customers to take 3.2 billion single-use plastic bags out of circulation every year for the benefit of our waterways, oceans and marine life.” PWKD16072018
